Your LG TV Is Collecting Your Data—Here's How to Stop It

Smart TVs gather viewing habits and personal data. Learn what's happening and how to take control.

You turn on your LG TV to watch the news. Behind the scenes, your television is doing more than displaying a picture—it's logging what you watch, when you watch it, and building a profile of your habits.

Smart TVs have become powerful data-collection devices. Manufacturers, ad networks, and third-party apps track your behavior to sell insights to advertisers and marketers. If you use your TV for streaming, shopping, or connecting smart home devices, that activity is often recorded and stored on the device itself.

The problem: even if you try to disable tracking features or change privacy settings, some data logs stay embedded in your TV's hardware. Settings alone won't remove them.

What data does your LG TV collect?

Most modern LG TVs gather:

  • Viewing history and channel selections
  • Apps you install and use
  • Search queries and browsing activity
  • Device identifiers tied to your home network
  • Interaction data (pause, rewind, fast-forward patterns)

This information is used to build advertising profiles, sell to data brokers, or improve recommendations. Some of it never leaves your TV.

Factory reset is the nuclear option

If you want to remove data logs that are stored directly on your TV's hardware, a factory reset is the only reliable method. This wipes the device back to its original state, clearing viewing history, app data, login credentials, and local storage logs.

When you should consider it:

  • Before selling or giving away your TV
  • If you've noticed unusual ad targeting or device behavior
  • When resetting privacy settings doesn't feel like enough
  • If your TV is several years old and has accumulated significant activity data

How to factory reset an LG TV

Steps vary by model, but the general process is:

  1. Press the Settings button on your remote
  2. Navigate to General or System
  3. Select Reset to Initial Settings or Factory Reset
  4. Enter your PIN (default is often 0000)
  5. Confirm—the TV will restart and clear all data

Check your TV's manual or LG's support site for your specific model, as the menu structure differs.

What reset does—and doesn't—do

A factory reset clears local storage and activity logs. It does not undo data already sent to LG's servers or ad networks before the reset. Once viewing data leaves your home, the reset won't retrieve it.

To minimize future collection, adjust privacy settings after the reset:

  • Disable ad tracking and personalization in settings
  • Turn off voice recognition if you don't use it
  • Opt out of data-sharing programs where available
  • Use your TV's built-in privacy controls

Not all settings can be fully disabled—many modern TVs require some data collection to function—but you can significantly reduce the amount of information your device gathers.

The bigger picture

This issue affects most smart TVs, not just LG models. The business model is simple: free or affordable hardware, revenue from data. If you own a smart TV, assume it's collecting information. The question is how much you're willing to tolerate and what steps you're willing to take.

A factory reset is a blunt tool, but it works. It gives you at least one way to take back control of what your TV knows about you.
